Home » Destinations » Giraffe Centre Nairobi – Feed, Kiss & Learn About Giraffes
There’s something surreal about locking eyes with a giraffe from your own eye level. Its head leans in, tongue out, unapologetically long. You hesitate. Then laugh. Then feed it a pellet. And just like that, you’ve made a new friend—who happens to be over 5 meters tall.
This is Giraffe Centre Nairobi—where giraffes don’t just roam in the background. They walk up, lean in, and maybe even give you a kiss (tongue optional, your choice).
Because it’s the one place where conservation is fun. You’re not just reading signs or watching from behind a fence. You’re in it—feeding giraffes, touching their heads, and hearing their stories straight from passionate local guides.
It’s also the only place where your childhood dream of meeting a giraffe face-to-face gets a reality upgrade—with snacks, selfies, and just enough slobber to make it memorable.
And if you’re in Nairobi for even one day—this is the spot that gives you safari energy without leaving the city.
While the Centre is focused on giraffes, it’s not a one-animal show.
Species | What You’ll See |
Rothschild’s Giraffes | The stars of the show—endangered, elegant, and unusually polite |
Warthogs | Wander around like scruffy, underrated sidekicks |
Birdlife | Common bulbuls, sunbirds, and weavers are often seen in the garden area |
Occasional Dik-diks | Small, shy antelopes spotted near the nature trail |
The Rothschild’s giraffes are part of a breeding and reintroduction program. Most return to the wild after growing up here. Some stick around and become local celebrities.

Activities at the Giraffe Centre
There’s more to do than just feed giraffes (though that’s definitely the headline act).
Giraffe Feeding Platform
Climb up to eye level and offer food pellets by hand. You’ll get close—maybe too close—but it’s all part of the fun.
Giraffe Kisses (Optional)
Hold a pellet between your lips. Wait. The giraffe leans in. Slurp. You’re now bonded for life.
Educational Talk & History
Learn how the Centre helped save the Rothschild’s giraffe from near extinction. It’s hands-on conservation—no lectures, just stories and facts you’ll remember.
Self-Guided Nature Trail Walk
A 1.5-kilometer loop behind the Centre lets you stretch your legs under the acacia trees. It’s peaceful and filled with bird calls. Good spot for a slow reset.
Giraffe Centre Gift Shop
Pick up ethically made souvenirs that support wildlife and local artisans.
Combine with Nearby Attractions
The Giraffe Centre is 5 minutes from the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Manor. Easy to bundle them into one powerful half-day experience.
Best Time to Visit
Year-Round Access
Open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, including weekends and public holidays.
Best Hours
Mornings are less crowded and cooler. Visit between 9:00–11:00 AM for the calmest experience and most active giraffes.
Avoid Midday Crowds
Tour buses usually arrive around noon. If you’re seeking fewer people and better photo moments, come early or after 3:30 PM.
Rainy seasons (April–May, November) don’t stop the fun—but do bring a raincoat. Giraffes don’t mind getting wet. You might.
Location & Accessibility
The Giraffe Centre is located in Lang’ata, Nairobi, about 20 km southwest of the city center, in a leafy residential area near Nairobi National Park.
How to Get There:
By Taxi or Ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt)
Most visitors use ride apps from central Nairobi. Drive time: 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic.
